Visby, Gotland

1 First and only title

First of all, I’m sorry, dear English readers. I’m sorry because this article won’t be a complete translation of the French corresponding one. I’m actually going to skip all the bullshit romance preceding the few informations in the end. Some of you might even find it better this way, I presume.

2 Second title

Yes, I lied.

3 Gotland

I went to Gotland on April 27, a fantastic island of southern Sweden with wonderful landscape and amazing lights, as everywhere in this great country. Good occasion to take a FEW pictures :

Some more may come later.

[EDIT] Some more :

Truth at last

Everyone should know Mr Gildas Chabot, better known under the name of Jean Jules Cheminée, who represents a quarter of the global population from our school that lives in Scandinavia at the moment. Gildas is actually nice guy if you don’t mention a particular hobbies of his which consists in taking the ugliest possible pictures of me.

But enough of portrait. Let’s seek the pure factual truth. Above all, Gildas there is something that Gildas loves. Something that pushes him through life and pain. Something that brought him to Norway. Something without which Gildas wouldn’t be Gildas : The Ice Cream Sandwich.

And so buys Gildas this delicious Norwegian ice cream pack per pack, all day long of each week, every month, and so is it to be for the rest of his life.

Here is a scheme of what an ice cream sandwich looks like :

un ice cream sandwich

A wild ice cream sandwich

This was not of any interest nor even questionable until a huge controversy fell on the topic. Against all the holly evidences which would claim that the ice cream sandwich can only be found in there homeland, Norway, I was able to find some in Stockholm, capital of the rival nation of all times. But pics or it didn’t happen :

Corentin mange un icecream sandwich
Me, at work, with an ice cream sandwich

And yet is there horror and despair to come ! As devil is in the details, take a look at this almost invisible logo, hidden on the side of the package :

miko !!
MIIIIKOOOOOO !!! NOOOOOOOOO !!!

And now and forever shall the horrific truth spread in this pointless world ! Liars and sinners walking into the torture of redemption, you will remain in history as those who paid the terrific price of betrayal ! The ice cream sandwich is the creature of Satan, represented by the multinational corporation of Miko ! And a few fools that don’t fear death or sorrow even pretend that the precious food were never a Norwegian invention, but a Swedish one ! Yes, my friends, misery crushes the skies ! A long time ago, way before the absorption of any living company by the giant Unilever, a small busyness called Glace Bolaget was struggling to death for the ice cream supremacy on Scandinavia, against Diplom-Is from Norway. And in 1972, a new kind of ice cream appeared in the catalog (see in the top right corner) :

GB Glace catalog from 1972

On top right corner, the proof that the ice cream sandwich was introduced in Sweeden in 1972

Sad story indeed. Let’s hope that the fight is just at its begins and that the lost honor of the Ice Cream Sandwich will rise again in a near future. There is hope, but tight hope …

The Golden Age Of Gildesque

Our fellow readers (let’s be optimistic) are not without knowing that two of our friends, Gildas and Sarahjeanjulescheminee), are also in Scandinavia for their final year internship (in Oslo, to be more precise). The venue in the Norvegian capital of the famous Marcus Miller was an evant that we couldn’t miss, given the myth surrounding this multifaceted man, as he’s a groovy funk bass player reknown for his slap technique who has played with a handful of the most influential Jazz musicians, as well as a protector of the Funk in the intergalactic space :

Though, the tickets’ online cost was 300 NOK (converted in €uros : three arms, one kidney, and a mortgage upon your step mother), our friend Gildas decided to try to see if it was possible to buy cheaper tickets directly in the concert hall…

Definitely proud of getting tickets for only 180 NOK (which is worth, still in €uros, at least five times the income of Fredichoupinoukikoolapinoutoudoux, who sells his body code for money and a power steering), our (inter)national Gildas then figured that the tickets were for a theater play -in Norwegian, of course !

Gjøvik at dawn

Somewhere, in Norway…
03:00 – Hey,Sleep ?
04:00 – F**k, that bastard’s gone !
04:15 – Nevermind, let’s cook something…
04:30 – Yay ?! It’s getting light outside…
05:00 – Camera in the hand, time to go downtown for a walk !

Yep. Those days, the sun tends to rise quite early in the morning : there’s some light coming around 4 AM,and the sun itself appears near 6 AM, surrounding the mountains with a pretty nice light halo.

At the menu, some pics of a city still asleep, on which the sun is raising, with a nice weather ; what else ? Oh, yeah, the photos ? Here they are !

Thou shall not post !

… but anyway, I just f***in’ don’t care !

Me, I & MySelf

So, please let me briefly introduce myself. I am the one who will bring EVIL to this goddam’ blog, playin’ with the nerves of the admins, and tamperin’ with their minds !

Basically hired for translating purposes by the infamous Aurélien to deal with the articles written in Frog-speak by our too lazy comrade Corentin, don’t expect me to keep the original meaning of his pathetic writings…

Gjøvik

General information

Gjøvik is a town and a municipality in Oppland county, Norway. Along with the cities of Hamar and Lillehammer, it borders on Lake Mjøsa, Norway’s biggest lake.

Around 30,000 human beings live in Gjøvik, mostly in houses and buildings : the few biggest ones being students’ residential units.

One of the attractions is the Skibladner, the world’s oldest paddle steamer, on which one can be taken on board for a tour on the lake during the summer.

With the arrival and the sun, and the snow being almost melt, what better activity than going downtown and take profit of the nice weather to shoot some photos ?

France-Norway

w00t !

Hardly had I finalized the installation of the WordPress CMS through FTP to the Toile-libre web hosting service, that my colleague Corentin had already made an extensive advertisement campaign and published a quite generous article…

Now that I’m satisfied by the overall aspect of the website and that the plugins are correctly set up, I’ll be able to devote some of my time to writing articles, the topic of present one being our road trip from France to Scandinavia !

From the realm of cheese to the land of the Vikings

Storm before the calm

Our last semester in Caen at ENSICAEN / UCBN ended in quite a messy way, if we consider that within a couple of weeks we had to : take the exams at ENSICAEN, take the exams at UCBN (computer science research Master’s degree), empty, clean and check out our apartments, fill the several forms to go abroad and prepare the road trip…

These reasons, among others, led to the birth of a completely new and innovative music genre : the “I’m inflatin’ my bed while kickin’ a seriously groovy funk bass beat” Twisted !!!

Day 0

As Corentin lives in Lans-en-Vercors, a city in the French Alps close to Grenoble, I traveled by train from my hometown, Angoulême to reach the mountainous land of my road trip buddy.

Day 0 : Angoulême > Massy TGV > Lyon > Grenoble > Lans-en-Vercors

Day 0 : Angoulême > Massy TGV > Lyon > Grenoble > Lans-en-Vercors

Day 1

After filling Corentin’s brand new Peugeot 306 break -bought at least two weeks before leaving- with plenty of guitars basses pianos computer gear useful luggage, we left his home, beating the very first kilometers of a ~3000 km trip !

– Corentin, one week before leaving : “Er, there’s just a tape player in the car, don’t you have one of those things, you know, to plug a mp3 player into ?”

– Aurélien : “Wait a minute ! Let’s take some good flavour from my vintage tape collection !”

That’s how we finally brought around 30 old Jazz/Blues/?/Rock tapes to accompaign our trip, each one being more WTF than the others… unless !?

(Watch the next episode to know what happened to our soundscape !)

Day 1 : Grenoble > Kassel

There’s nothing very interesting to say about the trip itself, given we mostly drove on highways, making some pauses to rest or eat something ! We’d like to decern a special mention to Germany, where ervery highway seems to cross strange-smelling industrial areas…

We initially planned to spend the first night in Darmstadt’s youth hostel, but there were no rooms left, due to a seminar taking place at the same period. In consequence, we decided to try again in Kassel, which proved to be such a good idea !

We lost a huge amount of time in Kassel’s surroundings, driving from industrial to residential areas, and vice-versa, before finding our way to the city center, where people led us to the nearest youth hostel, which was still open despite the late hours (’round 23 o’clock ^_^).

Day 2

After having a huge breakfast in Kassel, we went back to our traveling activities, aiming at crossing Denmark and reaching Sweden !

Day 2 : Kassel > Göteborg

Day 2 : Kassel > Göteborg

To go from Germany to Denmark, one can take the Ferry at Puttgarden, which costs the cheap amount of 80€ for a four-wheeled car-type vehicle, for a 45-minutes cruise. For the occasion, we ate some cookies (yum yum !) made by Coline, Corentin’s sister Grin .

When traveling through Denmark, our tape player suddently died in a silence, and none of our attemps to change the fuses and check the wires turned into a success… may God pray for its soulicon ! We currently think that one possible cause of its trespassing is an overdose of good ol’ Jazz Fusion !

One funny thing we encountered on the road were signs to the town of Greve (see pics below), which in French means “a strike” Grin.

We finally left Denmark when taking the Malmö bridge, here again for the cheap amount of 43€. Then, we headed to Göteborg, where we had planned to find a youth hostel.

This one revealed to be quite tricky to find, as none of the pedestrians we asked our way to gave us the same information : hopefully, almost every person we spoke to made his/her best to help us, and we finally reached a hostel !

Day 3

Being tired of highways’ monotonous landscapes, we decided not to spend too much time on the road, and procrastinated (is this a real verb ? if not, please consider it as if it was.) the visit we were supposed to do in Oslo, where two friends of ours are for a 5-month internship.

Day 3 : Göteborg > Gjøvik

Day 3 : Göteborg > Gjøvik

We arrived in Gjøvik just in time to grasp some minutes of the Tourist’s Office young receptionist (we almost arrived at the closing time, which is at 4 PM) to get a map of the city that we used to go to the University, where an International Buddy was waiting for us with the key to my apartment at Sørbyen Studenthjem, a residential unit where most international students live…

Photos shot during the trip

– Aurélien : “Is co-pilot a good situation ?”

While being on the highway, there’s almost nothing to do if you’re not the one driving the car… so you’ve got plenty of time to take photos, the highest challenge actually laying in finding something enough interesting to be worth a shot !
